Engagement snapshot
- Mandate
- Turn a field-heavy service workflow into a production mobile product the team could own.
- Timeline
- 15 weeks including offline-first field testing.
- Team shape
- Operations director, 1 mobile engineer, 2 full-stack engineers, and 6 inspectors.
The problem
Inspectors captured site data offline in notes and spreadsheets, then spent evenings rewriting findings into reports and billing summaries.
What we built
Built a mobile inspection platform with offline capture, structured findings, photo attachments, and report generation tied to billing codes.
Operating context
The company did not need a prettier form app. It needed a product that respected real field conditions, weak connectivity, reporting standards, and the billing model that followed each inspection.
Key constraints
- Inspectors often worked with weak or no connectivity.
- Report output had to match client-ready formats and internal QA expectations.
- The app needed to reduce after-hours admin rather than just move it onto a phone.
What we built
Offline-first mobile capture
Stored structured findings, media, and signatures locally with safe sync behavior once connectivity returned.
Report and billing generation
Turned structured inspection data into client-ready reports and billing-linked work summaries.
QA-aware field workflow
Included review states and required evidence checks so quality improved while speed increased.
Delivery path
Ride-along discovery
Observed live inspections to understand what data was actually captured, skipped, or added later from memory.
Field pilot
Tested the app with a small inspector group to validate offline sync and report usability.
Scaled rollout
Expanded by inspection type and office while training QA staff on the new structured review flow.
Why it mattered
The biggest win was reclaiming inspector time. Report writing moved closer to the inspection itself, which improved data quality and reduced the hidden evening workload that had been limiting utilization.
Implementation notes
- Offline behavior is a core product feature, not a technical footnote, in field operations.
- Structured findings outperform free-text notes only if the capture flow stays fast in real conditions.
- Utilization gains came from removing duplicate work, not from pushing inspectors to work faster in the field.
